Four pages of images from a transcontinental train trip across the northern United States and then back across southern Canada in a loop returning to my station of origin: This page includes images from Pennsylvania, New York, and Niagara Falls. Subsequent pages include images from Toronto and the VIA Train, Ontario and Alberta provinces, and British Columbia province and Seattle, Washington.

Images while riding Amtrak through Pennsylvania and New York
February 19-26, 2008

Naked trees of winter in Western Pennsylvania
[Tree near the track and those atop a nearby hillside are all just trunks and branches. There are no evergreen trees. The grass is mostly, but not completely, snow-covered.]

Johnstown, Pennsylvania Amtrak station seen from my seat on the other side of the train.
[The image is nearly completely outlined by the framing of the window. Outside the window is a red brick building with white x-framed windows. White chunks of snow are flying between the window and the building.]

Huntingdon, Pennsylvania Amtrak station
[A long two-story cream-colored building with red trim around all the curved windows on the second floor and all the square windows and doors on the first floor.]

Utica, New York Transportation Center waiting area with real marble columns and heated seating (Built in 1915.)
[Skylights add light to the buidling in addition to the many bulbs which are positioned across the beams of the roof. The columns are variegated marble and nearly two stories tall. The open space has wooden benchs with marble tops and heating vents positioned in the tops.]

The main hallway at the Utica, New York Transportation Center
[This hallway contains wooden information kiosks with clocks atop them. The ceiling is curved and has circular depressions. Three chandeliers with globe bulbs hang from the ceilings. The marble columns are topped by a row of windows before reaching the curved ceiling.]

The Utica, New York Transportation Center also handles the Adironack Scenic Railroad trains.
[The snow is coming down heavily and it is stacked upon a passenger car which has Adirondack Scenic Railroad Tupper Lake printed on it in gold lettering on a grey background.]

Queen Victoria Park Greenhouses - Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada
February 28, 2008

The greenhouses were lush with plants. I don't know the names, but they were beautiful. Here's a sampling:
[Bright orange blooms in a clump at the top of the plant with long wide leaves. There are four clumps of blooms of which two are fully open.]

(The center of these leaves look like sparkling lights.)
[Large grey leaves have a yellow center with the initial part of the veins extending into the leaves also yellow so they appear to be sparlking stars on the leaves. There are also two different plants with long stems one of which is pink-purple and the other is tan with white blooms.]

[Extending from a plant with very long thin leaves are branches each having about a dozen blooms. Each bloom has five pink petals and a center that sticks out like a cap and has dark pink speckles on a light pink background.]

[Landscape view of more than a dozen plants. Some are hanging in pots while others are planted in the ground. There are so many plants it is hard to see where one stops and the next starts.]

[Portrait view of a walkway in the greenhouse. The curved all glass windowed roof is visible in the upper left. There are potted plants overflowing with blooms and greens hanging from the ceiling that one would either need to duck under or carefully try to walk around without touching all the plants on either side of the walkway.]

Hershey Building - Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada
February 27, 2008

The Hershey building has a snow-covered silver kiss on its top edge.
[A tan brick or stone building, sitting beside a much larger building with lots of windows, has a large silver replica of a Hershey candy kiss. There is snow on the kiss as well as on the ground.]

A kiss greets visitors.
[A statue of a silver Hershey kiss with eyes, eyebrows, an open mouth, and feet with blue sneakers, and arms with white gloves stands near a column of the building.]
