Views from Interstate 84 rest stops in Oregon along the Columbia River Gorge as well as images from the Bonneville Dam
(The Columbia River is the state border between Oregon and Washington.)

Interesting trees marking the edge of the roadway near the Columbia River. The far hills are in Washington.
[A lot of thin tall trees with no leaves were planted on the river side of the guardrail. They only very partially obscure the view of the hillsides on the other side of the river which have some heavily tree'd sections while other sections are bare. The river is visible only in a few places.]

The Columbia River widens at certain sections such as this one.
[There is some short sagebrush in the foreground, but the entire background is high hillsides and the curve of the river makes it appear one is looking at a lake rather than a river.]

Looking back at the Columbia River and the Oregon terrain on a rainy day.
[The guard rail separating the parking area from the slight drop into the river is on the right of the image. Several hillsides, each more shrouded in mist the further in the distance they are, are also along the right although the furthest one crosses the entire image due to the river's curve.]

Columbia River and Washington hillside
[Dark blue river in foreground and then a row of green evergreen and leaf-bearing trees and then several levels of gouged rock forming the hillside/cliffside. Flat fields and a carpet of evergreens can be seen in the distance.]

More of the gorge
[Several rows of scored rock forming cliffsides along the river.]

A more expansive view across the river
[River in foreground, wheat-colored mountain side with green trees scattered on it and some light colored sky visible at the top.]

Memaloose Island monument marks the grave of Victor Trevitt, a pioneer and friend of the Indians native to this area.
[A skinny finger of an island in the river with a two-tier grey monument on it.]

Oregon grape plant
[A bush style plant with holly-like pointed leaves and bunches of what appear more like blue berries than grapes.]

Rose hips are the fruit of a rose plant.
[Green rose leaves and lots of small reddish, oblong fruit. No rose blooms are visible.]

Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River - Cascade Locks, Oregon
August 28, 2006

Upper section of Bonneville Power Station Fish Ladder
[A series of concrete channels permits the water to pass around them, but also regulates the flow such that fish would be able to pass around the dam.]

Lower section of Bonneville Power Station Fish Ladder
[This looks like a series of wide steps with a full stream of water running down it. There is a fence and a viewing platform to the right and there are people leaning on the railing looking at the water.]

Rainbow in the outfall
[The dam is a series of arched sections with whitewater coming through the gates. The spray of water creates a partial rainbow in it.]

View of a Washington mountain from Bonneville island
[Looking across the top of the dam to an evergreen covered mountain on the opposite shore of the river.]

Interstate 84 scenic viewpoint in northeast Oregon along the Columbia River
September 10, 2013

Columbia River looking downriver into the setting sun.
[The sun is a bright white ball with rays extending from it in the sky. A short wall winds into the foreground separating visitors from the vegetation at the river's edge.]

Windmills are a new addition since I last passed through this area.
[Windmills atop the ridge to the left as seen from the scenic rest stop. One can also see the interstate and the wall separating the rest stop from the vegetation beside the river.]
