On the Historic Columbia River Highway and hiking around Multnomah Falls - Northwest Oregon
March 24, 2008

Latourelle Falls on the Columbia Gorge scenic highway (The little specks of color on the grass hillside are people.)
[A very long, thin drop of water beyond the rocks and landing in a pool before dripping down to lower levels.]

Here's a closer view of the base of Latourelle Falls and the people still look tiny.
[A total whiteout of a huge stream of water hitting the ground with spray around it. There is then a gentle slope down which the water flows. A person wearing a red jacket stands in the vegetation on the right side, but none of the features are distiguishable since the person is small even in this closer view.]

Fairy Falls on the hike northeast of Multnomah Falls
[A multi-level spray of water down a hillside. Lots of wispy type sprays which may be how it got its name.]

Washington side of the Columbia River on the hike to the upper part of Multnomah Falls
[Looking through some evergreen trees on this side of the shore to the mountain on the other side of the Columbia River. The mountains are showing a lot of rock, but also have a lot of evergreens. The far shore is hazy due to the distance.]

Another view of the Washington landscape while on the hike above Multnomah Falls
[Looking through the evergreens from the top of this shore to the opposite side of the Columbia River. The mountains are snow-capped and in the far distance with a lower valley filled with evergreesn beside the river.]

Looking down on the top of Multnomah Falls. Cars in the parking lot on the very right of the photo are over 600 feet below.
[This view was taken from an overlook directly above the lip of the waterfall so there is some turbulence before the whitewater is created from the drop. Most of the image is hillside covered with trees so the drop is not really evident until one notices the buildings in the lower corner which are at the parking lot level.]

Upstream of Multnomah Falls
[A water cascade across rocks in a series of short drops in elevation. The stream is going back and forth as it finds the path of least resistance.]

Columbia River gorge seen from Crown Point on the scenic highway.
[A look upstream of the wide Columbia river with its sections of low lands and high walls beside the edges of the waterway. A cloud overhead has put some of the low lands in shadow while the rest is in full sun.]

Original stone railing near Shepperd's Dell on the scenic highway
[The railing is made of large stone which has been fashioned into six arches. The top level of stone is completely moss-covered making it green while the rest is grey. The railing curves toward the camera. The hillside opposite the railing is so high the top can not be seen in the image.]
