This page and the next contain images from both the American side and the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. Images were taken in February 2008 and February 2009. While the temperature in 2008 was bitter cold (17F plus a wind chill), the temperature in 2009 was just above freezing (39F). The landscape and water reflected the temperature differences; I actually saw grass on the ground in 2009.
Niagara rapids near Three Sisters: The bridge to farthest part of these islands was permanently closed in 2009 due to deteriorated conditions, so glad I braved the cold to see it in 2008. (Feb. 2008)
Another view of the many rapids upstream of American Falls: I traversed several pedestrian bridges linking islands in the rapids to take this image. (Feb. 2008)
Entire rapids heading toward American Falls: The edge of the falls is not visible in this image. (Feb. 2009)
Niagara Rapids upstream of American Falls looking back at the pedestrian bridge from which the prior panoramic view was taken. (Feb. 2008)
View of rapids seen from Goat Island in center of the river heading toward American Falls. (Feb. 2009)
Rapids prior to American Falls (Feb. 2009)
Rapids heading toward American Falls: The line of blue water in the middle of the image is the top edge of the falls. (Feb 2009)
Part of American Falls seen from the Canadian side. (Feb. 2009)
American Falls viewed from the Rainbow Bridge connecting the United States and Canada. (Feb. 2008)
American Falls seen from American side viewing platform, which is quite a ways north of the section of the falls in the prior two images. (Feb. 2009)
Outfall downstream of American Falls viewed from the Rainbow Bridge: The image on the left is 2009 while the image on the right with significantly thicker ice is from 2008.
