Carlsbad Caverns National Park - Carlsbad, New Mexico
June 17, 2006

The path into the caverns
[The switchback path is paved with grey asphalt and lines on both sides with white-tan adobe style stone walls and is completely under the edge of a huge stone overhang. There are kids on the far switchback.]

The entrance to the cavern is on the far right where the railing and people are located.
[There is an entrance into a dark hole in the stone. The railing and people on the right are quite tiny in comparison to the size of the hole. There is a multitude of rock crevices and pieces in the area that is not the walkway.]

Always good to have a big external flash for one's camera when photographing inside a cavern.
[A well-lit view of stalactites meeting stalagmites and many of each separately in the creamy white-brown rock.]

The park service had a light shining on the stalagmite named Sun Worship.
[A yellowish light shines not only on the stalagmite, but also on the many spear-like stalactites hanging from above. It also looks like portions of the rock are 'melting' off the stalagmite.]

Picnic tables to the left for those wanting to lunch at the park
[The ground, covered in scrubgrass and cacti, seems flat for as far as the eye can see. Two picnic tables with benches and a grill are on some gravel amid the brushy vegetation.]

The hillside around the opening leading down to the caverns
[Nearly the entire image is a hillside going up to the sky. It is covered in cacti, medium-size green vegeation, and rocks.]

Prickly pear catcus with some ripe purple fruit
[The plant withits many, many flat oval leaves covers the entire image. There are many green pears attached to the leaves, but only a few purple ones near the front of the image.]

From the edge of the parking lot one can see the edge of the Guadaloupe Mountain range in Texas.
[The edge of the paved parking lot is on the right. The ground slopes away from the parking lot down a hillside with quite a bit of dark green shrubbery. In the far distance is a blue-grey outline of the top of a mountain range which then slopes sharply down to the horizon line. The sky is blue without any clouds.]

The roadway through the canyon to the top of the hillside and the entrance to the caverns
[A paved roadway winds well below the tops of the rocky canyon walls. There is some green vegetation on the valley level where the road is.]
