Montana images - page 4 of 7
This page contains images from the drive to, from, and around Glacier National Park. We drove around the park because Going to the Sun Road within the park was closed in the middle due to construction and our lodgings were beyond the construction point. Subsequent pages include images from within the bounds of the park.

Views on the way to and from Glacier National Park - West Glacier, Montana
September 18 and 22, 2006

A view from the southwest side of Flathead Lake
[The jagged irregular edges of the lake contain many short evergreens. On the far side of the lake are large hills and a mountain range is in the distance.]

Another view from the southwest side of Flathead Lake
[Peeking through two trees to see a closer view of snow-capped mountains in the distance. In the mid-distance is a hillside full of evergreens with the lake lapping its lower edge.]

South end of Flathead Lake
[Rolling hills with scattered short evergreens cover the ground near the lake. The sky is full of thick clouds which reflect on the water making it appear near-white rather than blue.]

Hungry Horse Dam, on the south fork of the Flathead River (upstream of Flathead Lake), is 564 feet tall.
[View from atop the dam at one end looking at the curve of concrete which appears to have a brown coating. A few concrete support pillars rise above the curve. The hillside both near and far are covered in evergreens some of which are obscured by low-handing fog.]

The view below Hungry Horse Dam
[The river runs straight for a short distance before heading right and out of view behind the huge hillside. The hillsides on either side of the river are steep and evergreen covered. There is a lot of fog at the skyline level on the left side.]

Looking up at the mountains from Marias Pass which is on the Continental Divide just south of Glacier National Park. (The top of Summit Mountain is approximately 3500 feet above the pass.)
[In the center of the image is a mountain peak which is well above the tree line. In appears half of this mountain is above the tree line since the upper half is all shade of grey. There are some trees in the middle and many more at the lower levels.]

Thompson Falls Dam regulating the flow of the Clark Fork River.
[The dam is very wide across, but is relatively short in height. There are a number of visible poles supporting the upper deck of the dam and thin streams of water pass around them across the concrete. There are plenty of evergreens and buildings behind the dam and a mountain range in the distance behind it.]

A view of the Clark Fork River downstream of Thompson Falls
[A rocky shorelines sticks out into the river in an irregular fashion. Plenty of evergreens on the far shore of the river with a mountain in the far distance on the right.]

Goat rocks (name on the placard at the viewing point) east of Thompson Falls, Montana (Didn't see any goats during our brief stop here.)
[A relatively short mountains which has many many rock crevices leading to its tree-topped summit. Also plenty of evergreens at the ground level near the brown river.]
