Pompey's Pillar - 25 miles east of Billings, Montana
August 5, 2007

Pompey's Pillar seen from road.
[A large stone sits in the grass by itself. It is the same height as the rock on the opposite side of the river, but that rock runs the length of the river at this location while the rock is the only thing at that height on this side of the river.]

View from atop Pompey's Pillar looking westward at the Yellowstone River.
[There is a line of trees at the water's edge on this side of the river and behind is a farm field. On the other side of the river is a tall rock face--more a cliff--with trees at the top. The river is wide, but does not appear overly deep.]

Pompey's Pillar was a landmark for those crossing the country and many etched their name in the sandstone including William Clark of Lewis and Clark Expedition fame. Clark signed it July 25, 1806.
[There is etching of initials and names on the part of rock shown in the image. Clark's signature is protected with a glass-framed lockbox. He signed his name W. Clark.]

Rosebud County, Montana
September 10, 2011 (except for one photo from 2010)

The first two photos are the same rest stop on Interstate 94 on two different trips through the area. Notice the water level is lower and the ground browner later in the summer.

June 13, 2010
[Water is muddy colored and near the top of the bank. Ground vegetation is green.]

September 10, 2011
[Blue river with several feet of bank visible. Most of ground vegetation is wheat colored.]

Further upstream the Yellowstone River
[Lots more trees near the river's edge in this photo than the prior ones.]

River in the distance from the rest stop view
[Vegetation in foreground and background with river in the middle. In the far distance are canyon walls.]

Panoramic view from the edge of the rest stop hill
[Four photos stitched together showing the river with an island in the middle thus making it appear the river is split into two streams. A lot of sand is visible at one end of the island. Trees line the edges of the river.]
