Smith Scenic River Byway - Northern California
July 26, 2012

Smith River as seen from a pull-off on US-199
[A narrow river running through whitish-grey rocks in a valley. The setting sun puts all but the one tree'd hillside in shadow.]

Another section of the Smith River
[Only a small portion of the image is in shade. The rest is in full sun showing how the rocks in the river create turbulence.]

Lots of turbulence in this river
[A turbulent section of river beside a circular opening in the adjacent rock.]

Hat Creek Rim Overlook in Lassen National Forest on California State Route 44

Still snow on Lassen Peak (14 miles away) in Lassen Volcanic National Park
[From near to far the hills become taller and more grey. Lassen Peak is in the far distance with triangles of snow coming down from the top in several places. The near hills are covered in evergreens.]

Sugarloaf Peak (3 miles away) is on the far left with CA-89 winding through the middle of the image.
[Several photos stitched together of mountains in the distance with a large peak to the left. The middle of the image is a flat terrain well below the foreground burned out trees near the overlook platform.]

The fire on Sugarloaf Peak happened 20 years ago.
[The mound of the mountain nearly reaches the top of the photos while the sides extend through the middle third of the image. The valley in the foreground is mostly clear land while the mountain is full of tree trunks.]

Closer view of the land on Sugarloaf Peak
[While most of this image is of bare tree trunks, there are some evergreens with full greenery.]

Shasta Valley Vista Point southbound on Interstate 5
August 5, 2012

Mount Shasta is the 14,179 foot snow-covered peak in the distance.
[The image is what appears to be a large shadow mountain superimposed over a darker one in the foreground which is less than half its height. In reality Mount Shasta is just that far in the distance that the haze makes it seem shadowy. The top quarter to a third of Mount Shasta has snow on it. The top peak is in the puffy clouds in the sky.]

View from the vista point looking the direction opposite Mount Shasta.
[Approximately six images stitched together with the pavement (and big white directional arrow) in the foreground and near and far mounds of land. Most of the far mountains are tree covered but the nearer mounds are covered with beige vegetation.]

Northbound Interstate 5 rest stop
November 15, 2012

Mount Shasta seen from northbound rest stop along I-5.
[Photo nearly appears to be black and white but it is in color. There is a whoosh stream cloud sitting right above the top of the mountain. The mountain has lots of snow but there is also rock, trees, and ground visible as darkness up and down throughout many parts of the mountain.]

Closer view of the side of Mount Shasta
[This closer view of the side of the mountain makes it appear there is a sheet of ice covering all that can be seen -- snow and rock.]

California State Route 89

Mount Shasta from a viewpoint in Shasta National Forest
[Behind and above a screen of evergreens is a tall, mostly snow-covered mountain. Some strips of light grey rock are also visible. The sky is mostly white clouds although there is a peek of blue.]

Colorful trees along CA-89
[Forest of red-orangish leafed oaks with a few evergreen trees sticking up among them.]

Northbound Interstate 5 rest stops
November 24, 2005

A finger of Lake Shasta seen from the rest stop.
[The water is quite green and quite low. Rings of higher levels can be seen on the dirt hillsides below where the treeline starts. The trees do look dried.]

A view above that finger of the lake
[Beautifully shaped symmetrical evergreens are in the foreground with expansive high hills along the sides and background of the image. The sky is clear.]

Mount Shasta seen from one mile south of Castella (approximately 20 miles from Mount Shasta).
[The completely snow-covered mountain is visible behind some trees as the rest stop. The sky is cloudless so the white is clearly visible behind the green tree.]

As I drove northward, the weather became overcast. Mount Shasta seen from a different northbound rest stop along I-5.
[Hardly any snow is visible on the mountain because the top part of the mountain is completely covered in clouds and not visible. There is some snow at the lower level which is visible before tapering downward to green growth. There is no precipitation on the roadway even though the sky is completely overcast.]

Looking the opposite direction at the same rest stop as the prior photo.
[Some short mountains have visible snow on the ground amid the green trees. There are low clouds partially covering lower levels of this mountain (but not the tops of it). The fields below the mountain appear to be dried grass.]
