Interstate 70's easternmost rest stop in Utah (in the middle of the state)
July 5, 2012

View at the reststop
[A dirt hill with rocks over much of it adn two lone pieces of shrubbery at the top. In the distance are canyon walls and mountains.]

Looking eastward toward Colorado.
[The two separate roadways (eastbound and westbound) extending into the distance over mostly flat land. There are some trees in the foreground (at the top of the hill from which this photo was taken) and one far distant sloping hillside is also covered with dark green shrubbery.]

A view from the top of the trail accessed from the rest stop
[Near the top of a rock outcropping with stacked horizontal slabs of rock. This view is at least several hundred feet above the lower levels. While there is some green shrubs growing on the rock, the ground below is nearly all brown dirt and rock.]

The Great Salt Lake - just west of Salt Lake City, Utah
Images taken at a westbound scenic view rest stop on Interstate 80.

View of Great Salt Lake through the myriad of rain clouds and open skies (The lake is big enough to have both simultaneously.)
[Dark clouds overhead in the foreground while blue skies with white puffy clouds are in the background. Trees in the foreground partially cover the view of the lake, but the mountains darkened by the clouds are clearly visible in the distance. Other mountains are light colored as rain clouds do not cover them.]

A close view of the lake's edge (The dark blue in the background above the far shore is the Wasatch Mountains range.)
[A rock outcroppping near the water's edge appears to be covered in salt. There is sage growing on the land. In the background covering more than a third of the image is the dark blue shadow outline of the Wasatch Mountains. There are some puffy clouds in the sky above the distant mountains.]

My attempt to capture the vast size of Great Salt Lake. (Clouds and rain scattered overhead made odd shadows on the image.)
[Three photos stitched together (with photo edge demarcations somewhat visible) showing greenery at the foreground, the lake in the mid-ground and mountains in the distance off to the left.]

Hillside opposite the lake
[Two photos stitched together showing grey rock, hillside with some greenery and some wheat-colored vegetation above the interstate.]

Bonneville Salt Flats - Wendover, Utah (near the border with Nevada)
This is where the land speed records were set.

Bonneville Salt Flats (Had rained ealier in the day so those are water puddles on the right.)
[Approximately six photos stitched together showing vast flat land with mountains in the distance. Four people (small dark splotches) are walking out onto the salt flats from the ring of dirt at the edge of the salt.]

Close view of the salt on the land
[Salt is like a broken white crust over the dirt and pebbles.]

I don't know what this cement casing was from, but it shows how the salt builds up.
[Cement chunk that looks like it had a pipe running through it at one time (there's a cylindrical hole in the center). Most of the outsides of it are caked with at least a half inch of salt buildup.]

Should you wish to walk on the salt, here's a place to wash it from your feet or sandals.
[Foot Wash sign over a basin area near the edge of the salty ground. Beside it is a Welcome to the Bonneville Salt Flats sign.]

Proof vegetation can grow in this environment.
[Tall, globe-shaped tree growing in a raised bed sitting atop the cement at the rest stop. It overhags the picnic shelter roof.]
