Ocean Beach looking southward.
[A wave hitting rocky coast causing a spray into the air. The rest of the wave continues to the adjacent sandy shore.]

Ocean Beach looking northward.
[A two part beach with the part closest to water consisting of a band of sand while beside it and adjacent to the hillside is a band of small rocks interspersed with a few pieces of whitish driftwood.]

A peek at the ocean
[Several different types of evergreens in the foreground partially block the view of the ocean. Puffy white clouds cover most of the blue sky.]

Chesnut-backed chickadee
[The bird has a dark brown top half of its head with a white lower half. The body is a chestnut color on the bakd and part of the belly. Its wings and tail are grey and stick out from the chestnut parts. It is perched in a short-leaf evergreen.]

Low tide beach
[A skim of water covers the sand as also do many small stones. Clearing rain clouds allow a skim of light from the horizon across the sand.]

Nature's artwork
[The receding ocean leaves strips of color in the sand from the darker colored grains. Amid these strips of color are different sized dark stones.]

Heceta Head with lighthouse and sea lion locations marked.
[The lighthouse is on a jut of land in the back of the image with a name and arrow pointing out its location. A double cove of land leads to the area in the foregound where the sea lion location is labeled with a name and arrow.]

Heceta Head lighthouse (closed due to renovations) on the left and the B&B guest houses inland
[A closer view of the left portion of the prior photo. The top of the lighthouse is shrouded with black netting completely covering the light. Several small outbuildings are visible to its right.]

Heceta Head lighthouse with renovations complete
[A white lighthouse with a red cap with several red-roofed white buildings near it. All are perched at the edge of a rock outcropping extending into the ocean. This view was taken from a high vantage point across a small bay.]

Close view of the lighthouse
[A white lighthouse with a red cap with a house-like building which appears attached to the inland side. The house is also white with a red roof and has a white chimney on the inland side. Two other white buildings with red roofs are in the same area with a fence marking the edge of the cliff.]

Although I could hear what sounded to be sea lions, all I saw were rocks.
[Looking down a cliff at the water's edge at large rocks and smaller gray and brown clumps which also appear to rocks.]

Then I looked closer. The Stellar sea lion with the markings on its fur is approximately 11 years old.
[Dozens of sea lions lie beside and on top of each other. Most are black, but some are brown, and one has a mark in its fur (for tracking purposes).]

I was hundreds of feet from this one, so it may be a coincidence it was looking my direction.
[The head of a sea lion is completely above the water with its eyes, nose, mouth, and ears visible.]

Stellar sea lion cubs are black. As they mature, their fur becomes light brown.
[This dark brown/black sea lion has three of four flippers visible as it appears to sit up on the rocky surface.]

Adult Stellar sea lions are 3-4 times as big as California sea lions.
[Sea lion with light brown fur and what appear to be sting marks on its back is lying on the rocky ground.]

Heceta Beach
