Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge - Mound City, Missouri

Welcome mat in front of visitor's center

Great egret
[All white bird with a long yellow pointed bill stands in the grass with its back to the camera and its head turned to the right.]

American coots
[In the midst of a huge expanse of water are over 20 black waterfowl with white beaks. The water is probably not deep because there are numerous clumps of vegetation sticking out of the water.]

Morel mushroom
[A tall thin mushroom with a white stem and a reddish brown tip. The stem leading to the tip has a bit of a reddish cast.]

While passing through Independence, Missouri on August 12, 2012, the clouds caught the attention of several of us on the ground.

Springfield Nature Center Conservation Trails - Springfield, Missouri

The trails are part paved, part boardwalk, and part dirt. (Lots of trees block the sunlight in this section.)

This fawn moved fast even though it was close to its mother.

[This youngster is somewhat larger and its spots are a little less defined. This image is taken from the backside of the animal and part of the head is hidden behind a tree.]

This was one of the larger deer with the fawn immediately above.
[Somewhat skinny deer (ribs can be seen through the fur) looking at the came through the trees.]

Tufted titmouse
[ A small bird from the underside framed by unfocused leaves. The bird has a grey belly with red under its wings which are slightly outstretched.]

Indigo Bunting in the field
[All blue bird with some black on its wings and a grey beak sitting on the bent branch of a large field plant.]

Bee or wasp heading for some of that sweet smelling stuff.
[A bee flies upward to a large field plant with a huge multi-blossomed flower drooping downward.]
